Maya's 1st bone marrow transplant took place April 30, 2010. Thank you, thank you, thank you to her wonderful donor, Melissa. GOD BLESS YOU!!!!

Overall, Maya has done well. There have been many ups & downs over the past 2 years but the HLH has stayed in remission. Maya has fought so hard and continues to fight with smile on her face. She truly is a hero!

Early this spring she contracted Epstein- Barre and her blood has not been able to fully recover. Prior to starting the conditioning for her 2nd bone marrow transplant it was found that the HLH had reactivated. After a few weeks of treatment with the HLH-2004 protocol and pre-transplant conditioning, Maya received her 2nd BMT on September 22, 2012.Once again, Melissa has selflessly given of herself to be Maya's donor. Maya continues to fight with a smile on her face.

It is so important to get the word out about these rare diseases and to make sure that Doctors know what to look for. Maya was very fortunate that her Doctor knew about HLH. Many children are not as fortunate and without treatment, FLH is fatal within 2 months. The only chance of survival is a bone marrow transplant.
